まずは車でのアクセスが便利なことです。車なら、東京からも１時間ちょっとで着くし、高速道路から直接動物園の駐車場に入ることができます(ビックリしました！)。自然公園という名前の通り、山の中にあり、動物をみながら歩いているだけで、ハイキングをしているようなリフレッシュできる動物園で、森の中を歩いていると野生のリスも見ることができます。
本命だったコアラも何頭かいて、餌やりタイムに行けば、起きて動いている貴重な、可愛らしい姿が見られます。
動物園の入り口付近にはお土産屋さんやレストランもありますし、レジャーシートを広げてお弁当を食べられる芝生の場所やテーブルのついたベンチ、休憩所も沢山あります。やぎなどの草食動物に餌やりができる場所やカピバラがお風呂に入っている場所などはほのぼのします。身近な生き物の展示などもあり、小学生の学習にも良さそうです。
同じ自然公園の中に、公園もあります。この公園では大きなローラー滑り台が大人気で、行楽シーズンには子供達の行列ができています。動物園だけですと半日くらいで見終わることが出来ますが、お昼ごはんを挟んで公園でも遊ぶと、丸一日過ごすことが出来ます。売店ではローラー滑り台を滑る時にお尻に敷けるようなソリも売っていて、持ってきているご家族も多いですが、そのままでも大丈夫です。滑り台への登りは階段だけではなく、アスレチックのようになっている所を登ることも出来るので、小学生くらいでもだいぶ体力を消耗します。
公園のちかくには四季折々の花もたくさん咲いていて、自然いっぱいの公園です。公園のみの利用は無料、動物園に行っても入園料は大人500円、小学生200円、未就学児は無料なので、お安く大満足な一日が過ごせると思います。
動物園では、不定期で飼育員さんが動物達にエサをあげたり、その動物についてお話を聞かせてくださることがあり、ちょうど出会えた時は本当にラッキーです。特にゾウさんの餌を食べたり動いている姿は迫力満点です。カンガルーのエリアでは、時間によってはオリの中に入って見ることができます。
お出かけする際の注意点
山なので、坂道を沢山歩くことは覚悟した方が良いです。小さい子はベビーカー必須です。電車で行く場合は着くまでにまず山登りです。
